This simple circuit can be made for about $2.00. If you are making a lot of them it can save you a bundle. All you need is more time that money. A solid state relay (ssr) can cost from $6.00 to $20.00. If you need 10 or more that can put you in the poorhouse pretty quickly. I have been building my own SSRs for several years. The advantage is the cost, the disadvantage is the time it takes to assemble them. I can build about 6 of these circuits an hour. That is if I am building several at a time. This circuit offers a lot of voltage isolation from high voltage source and fast switching of the output light.
